President of the Czech Republic appointed new Minister of Defence
President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman appointed Vlastimil Picek as the new Minister of Defence at the Prague Castle on Tuesday 19 March 2013.
During the appointment ceremony, President Zeman emphasized that he holds former First Deputy Minister of Defence and former Chief of the General Staff of Armed Forces of the Czech Republic Vlastimil Picek in high esteem as the professional who knows challenges of the defence department.
“In his person, the post of the Minister of Defence will be held by a regarded professional,” says Petr Necas, Czech Prime Minister. According to him, Vlastimil Picek is able to fully work from the very beginning. His major tasks are solving issues of supersonic aircraft for the Czech Air Force, finalisation of defence legislature, reshaping defence ministry, and a gradual withdrawal of units from Afghanistan.
Vlastimil Picek said he would complete and present a “package of defence laws” to the Czech government that is aimed also at optimalisation of soldiers’ financial issues. He would also like to restructure both civilian and military parts of the Ministry of Defence and pay high attention to participation of Czech soldiers in foreign missions.
