President Milos Zeman receives Active Reserve Unit Commanders

On 16th November, at Prague Castle, President of the Czech Republic and Supreme Commander of the Czech Armed Forces Milos Zeman received the commanders of the Active Reserve rifle platoons from each of the 14 Regional Military Headquarters, along with seven Active Reserve commanders from various combat units.

After welcoming the commanders, President Zeman told his audience that he had, for some time, been studying their individual professions and was pleased to see that they represented a broad range of professional backgrounds.

"You are the salt of the earth, because you are individuals who wish to defend and help your country," said the President, and continued, "Let's be honest and admit that there are fewer such people today. A majority of people believe that there is no real reason to defend our country because no-one is going to threaten us. It is a gross error." He reminded them that there is currently an increased number of security threats which could affect the territory of the Czech Republic and that it is naïve to think otherwise.

"I greatly appreciate our brave soldiers, those who fight against terrorists in countries such as Afghanistan, and Mali, to mention but two, and you also have my deepest respect," said the President addressing the commanders.

Chief of the General Staff General Becvar also voiced his appreciation to the Head of State for his continued interest in and support of the Czech Armed Forces and its development. He pointed out that the military planned to recruit approximately five thousand soldiers into the Active Reserve Force before 2025. "I am very grateful for the interest expressed by our citizens in serving in the reserves. This year, more than 1600 citizens requested further information on joining, and so far 917 have already filed applications," confirmed General Becvar.

At the end of the ceremony, Captain (Ret.) Ludvik Cimburek, Assistant to the Chief of the General Staff for Active Reserve, thanked the President for the reception. President Zeman then personally greeted everyone at the gathering
