Prime Minister of the Czech government Petr Necas introduces Karolina Peake to the office of Minister of Defence following the appointment by President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus on 12 December 2012. Outgoing Minister Alexandr Vondra welcomes her at the Defence Ministry.

After a short introduction ceremony with high officials of civilian and military part of the Ministry of Defence, Minister Karolina Peake met with the press where she outlined her priorities in the office.

“I want, first of all, to continue in my work I have started as a Deputy Prime Minister. It means implementing reduction package, including reduction in agenda and bureaucracy also within the Defence Ministry,“ Peake said, and added that she would also like to go on in her anti-corruption priorities. “This ministry has been connected with widely discussed purchases in the past. Personal responsibility and clear competency for acquisitions and purchases will also be my priority,“ Peake added. Although she highly prefers civilian leadership in the Ministry of Defence, she confirmed she would carefully listen to needs of the military.

A day later, Minister Peake met with Chief of the General Staff of ACR Lieutenant General Petr Pavel at a lunch, where General Pavel invited her to the General Staff this week to get a detailed briefing on upcoming tasks of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic.

The second day at the Ministry, the new Minister of Defence also began to build her working staff.
