The election took place during the 48th Plenary Session of the Committee in Brussels on 6th December.

Brigadier General Zoltan Bubenik, M.D., has been Director of the Czech Military Medical Agency since February 2015. From 2018, for a three-year period, he will coordinate the work of COMEDS. The Committee provides recommendations to other NATO bodies and directly reports to and supports the decisions of the NATO Military Committee.

Conforming to NATO procedures, General Bubenik's election is subject to confirmation by the Military Committee scheduled for the end of this year.

"I regard my election to this prestigious Alliance organisation as recognition not only for the Czech Republic, but above all for our medical service. In this field, we have been achieving excellent long-term results and greater reliability in health care and medical support," said General Bubenik at the end of the session.

  • "Beyond the medical support of NATO operations, COMEDS represents the members’ health services on the NATO Military Committee (MC). The COMEDS was established in 1994 to advise the MC on all military health matters affecting NATO and reports to it once a year. Since there is no equivalent on the political side, if needed, COMEDS can be asked to report to the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s highest political decision-making body."
