High school students pitted their knowledge of the European Union, NATO, defence-related issues, and their physical skills during a five-day nation-wide final of Europa Nostra 2013 competition at the Military Training Area at Brdy.

"The final competition was held 3 - 7 June 2013 under a scenario of solving political disputes that could end up in security instability in a fictitious nation of Dormenistan. Students played roles of diplomats-negotiators, but had to show also their phyical skills, or their decision-making when passing a 'mine field'," Vladimir Palan, coordinator of the competition from the Ministry of Defence, says.

There were 13 three-member teams which have successfully come through the screen of lower rounds. Competition events included both knowledge and physical tests. The winners - the first three teams - will visit EU institutions in Brussels this July.

Students from the High School at Chotebor – Petr Meloun, Jan Dobrovolny and Miroslav Polivka - were best out of all contestants, and they got the "gold" medal in this team competition.

“Despite rather worse weather at the beginning, this nation-wide competition Europa Nostra was a full success,“ says Radek Spok, chief competition coordinator from the Charles University in Prague. „I was pleased with the active approach of all students during the whole week and their team cooperation. At the same time, I would like to thank to the whole organisational team and especially to soldiers who prepared military and expert events for this final round of the competition.“

The Europa Nostra 2013 competition was organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University in Prague and the Czech Ministry of Defence. It is a follow-up competition of the Europa Secura which was held for students in previous years.
