Czechs repel attack on Bamako EUTM Headquarters

On 21st March 2016, Czech soldiers, together with Malian forces, successfully foiled an attack on the Headquarters of the EU Training Mission in Bamako.

One attacker, armed with an AK type weapon, opened fire at the main gate of the EUTM Headquarters in Bamako which was being patrolled by Czech soldiers.

"Having followed standard procedures, the Czech soldiers took up their defence positions and, after positively identifying the attacker, they returned fire. With the cooperation of the Malian National Guard personnel they eventually took out the gunman," said Lieutenant General Josef Becvar, Chief of the General Staff of ACR. "Our soldiers successfully repelled the attack and the raiders failed in their attempt to break into the headquarters. For their bravery and resolute response these soldiers deserve and receive our full appreciation," added General Becvar.

The circumstance of the attack and the number of attackers is unknown, and an investigation is under way to uncover the as-yet-unidentified perpetrators of the assault. Neither Czech nor other EUTM personnel were wounded. This incident has proven that security measures at the base have been effectively implemented and cooperation with the Malian security forces is organized and effectual.

The assault happened just ten days after the new 7th Czech unit assumed the duty of protecting the Bamako base. It continues to serve!
