In 1948, he became a professional soldier of the Czechoslovak Army, but in 1971 he was dismissed due to his political attitudes. At the end of 1989, he participated in preparations of proposals of new a new military doctrine. In the post of the Chief of the General Staff of the Czechoslovak Army and later of the Chief of the General Staff he contributed to development of the Build-up Concept of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic and in 1996 he commenced with transformation of the military. Due to the split of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic, also the Czechoslovak Army was devided into independent Czech and Slovak militaries. A mechanised battalion and a surgical team have been deployed on UNPROFOR operation into countries of former Yugoslavia.
