In 1956, he became an officer of the Czechoslovak People's Army. In the 1970s and 1980s commanded a division, army corps and a military district. In the post of Chief of the General Staff of CSPA - 1st Deputy Minister of National Defence contributed to planning and implementation of international agreements on downsizing conventional armed forces in Europe. The General Staff, at this period, had been preparing a new military doctrine. In 1989, he was appointed Minister of National Defence. In 1991, he retired.
