Chief of the General Staff of the Czechoslovak People's Army
In 1937, he became an officer of the Czechoslovak Army. After Nazi Occupation of the Czechoslovak Republic, he left to exile. During WWII, he served in Czechoslovak units in the Soviet Union. In 1950s, he commanded a division, a corps and a military district. From 1956, he hold the post of Deputy Minister of National Defence. In the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Czechoslovak People's Army - 1st Deputy Minister of National Defence, he enforced higher autonomy of the Czechoslovak military leadership in the build-up of the army. He retired in 1977.
