Chief of the Main Staff of the Czechoslovak Defence Force
In 1918, he became an officer of the Czechoslovak Legions in Italy. After Nazi Occupation of the Czechoslovak Republic participated in home resistance, but as aerly as in 1939, he was arrested and kept in prison till the end of WWII. From 1946, he served in various positioins at the Main Staff and later, as its Chief, he supported deep Soviet influence in the military. He retired in 1951. A year later, he was taken into custody and sentenced to prison in a political process. He left the prison in 1958 and in 1990, he was rehabilitated.
