In 1916, he became an officer of the Serbian Legions in Romania. Later, he served with the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia, France and Italy. After the Nazi Occupation of the Czechoslovak Republic, he left to exile. In his positions of Minister of National Defenc of the Czechoslovak exile government in the Great Britain (1940-1944) and Chief Commander of the Czechoslovak Defence Force extraordinary contributed to the Czechoslovak military resistance abroad. From 1947, he was Czechoslovak Ambassador to the Netherlands. After February 1948, he remained in exile.
