Chief of the Supreme Staff of the Czechoslovak Defence Force
In 1915, he became an officer of the Austria-Hungarian Army. In 1917, entered the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia. During inter-war period, he commanded a division of the Czechoslovak Army and the Lands Military Command in Kosice. In his position of theChief of the Supreme Staff of the Czechoslovak Defence Force he initiated reorganisation and modernisation of the military. During the Munich Crisis in 1938 he was supreme commander of the mobilised forces. During WWII, he was arrested by Nazis. After 1945, he was not called back to the military and later, he was degraded and lost his military rank. In 1990, he was rehabilitated.
