In 1884, he became an officer of the French Army. During WW I, he served at the supreme command, commanded a division and a corps. From February 1919, he headed the French Military Mission to Czechoslovakia. During his service in Czechoslovakia, he contributed to formation of the Czechoslovak Army and its Supreme Staff. In 1920, he commanded Czechoslovak units in war against the Hungarian Republic of Councils.
